Before you read the rest of this try to estimate a good guess on how many times you think you laugh each day. Then we will get back to that subject.
A while back I read a Dr. Andrew Weil internet post about an MD, Dr. Madan Kataria from India, who is developing something called “Laughter Yoga”. Dr. Weil stated that studies have shown that children on average laugh four hundred times a day, while adults do only fifteen times a day. So, what was your estimate? I think I definitely laugh more than the average adult, but varies considerably with who I am around. In fact, the concept of laughter being efficacious is not a new one. Remember the movie “Patch Adams” with Robin Williams as a doctor who dressed like a clown when visiting his pediatric patients in the hospital? I am convinced that laughter is very beneficial. A number of years ago when I was really sick I purposely surrounded myself with funny TV shows, movies, books, and pleasant things. I think it definitely helped.

It stimulates the immune system; it improves blood flow to various organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs; it releases negative emotions; it helps you bond with people; it is a pain reliever; it helps with blood sugar regulation; it is a form of exercise; it improves blood pressure and cardiovascular health; it helps one cope with stressors and difficulties in life; and it lowers stress levels. Here is the only joke I can remember. I know. My family is wincing, they have heard it so many times and don’t think it is very funny. But I like it. You be the judge.
